Field Site Assignment PART 2 "Events"

FIELD SITE EVENTS

Event 1 listen HERE
  • 5th Ward train track bridge and tunnel - 10/8 at 6pm
  • Zoom H6 with Mid-Side capsule - volume level 8 - static recorder
  • A mostly barren section of a five-way intersection was meet with three cars at once. This recording captures a particularly loud chugging engine closest to the recorder as it's stopped at the intersection while all the cars try and work out who's going first, second, and third.
Event 2 listen HERE
  • 5th Ward train track bridge and tunnel - 10/8 at 6:30pm
  • Zoom H6 with Mid-Side capsule - volume level 8 - recorder follows subject
  • In a short tunnel under a bridge overpass, I heard the distant clanking of keys loose on a keychain. As the subject walked closer I pointed my recorder at him and followed him as he walked by.
Event 3 listen HERE
  • 5th Ward train track bridge - 10/8 at 6:45pm
  • Zoom H6 with XY capsule set at 90 degrees - volume level 6 - static recorder
  • A short clip of a train from above passing over an elevated bridge, the recorder was pointed up towards the bridge where the train stretched by. The closer proximity the tracks and wheels provided a distinctly higher pitched sound as the train went by.
Event 4 listen HERE
  • 5th Ward in the middle of a tunnel under the train track bridge - 10/8 at 7pm
  • Zoom H6 with XY capsule set at 120 degrees - volume level 8 - static recorder
  • Similar to event 2 but this time it was someone on their cell phone as they transitioned from walking outside the tunnel to walking through it. The pleasing thing about this recording is it really captured the voice in two distinct ways, outside voice into the confined echo of the voice as the person talking travelled into the tunnel.

Field Site Assignment PART 1

ROLLING HILLS WIND FARM Recording 1  listen HERE Rolling Hills Wind Farm - Massena, Iowa 9/30/17 - 6:30pm Zoom H6 - XY capsules at 120 degrees Spontaneous bursts of wind, this recording borders on too dense due to the proximity of the mic to the wind turbine. Mobile capture, the mic was slowly angled upward towards the blades of the turbine near the end of the recording.   Recording 2 listen HERE Rolling Hills Wind Farm - Massena, Iowa 9/30/17 - 5:30pm Zoom H6 - MS capsule Same wind conditions as recording 1, this recording is backed up quite a bit from the same wind turbine with tall stalks of corn on both sides which seemed to aid in wind reduction. Lots of insect chatter as well as corn leaves brushing against one another from the wind. Stationary recording pointing towards the wind turbine.

FIELD RECORDING | Audio Scavenger Hunt

Audio Scavenger Hunt Recording 1 - listen HERE 9/24 - 6:30am Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum - woods, calm environment Zoom H6 - XY mic capsules at 90-degrees then rotated to 120-degree capsules This was a particularly clean recording in a calm section of woods, above you can hear two distinct birds which were captured clearly, as the capsules are rotated wider you hear more background traffic and a helicopter enters the recording. Recording 2 - listen HERE 9/23 - 8:30pm Atwater Park - low to moderate traffic, very windy Zoom H6 - XY mic capsules at 120-degrees on a stand, two NT3 mics handheld pointed in the opposite direction from the Zoom mics. The NT3 mics isolated and captured a few pedestrians walking, you can clearly here keys jingling on one person as they walk by.  The was quite gusty so the mics would occasionally get hit with wind noise even with sufficient protection.  If I were to record in this kind of a windy envi...
